Why The Sweepstakes?
Facing urgent repairs on Locomotive 93 and Locomotive 40, the Steam Up Sweepstakes was created to raise essential funds and restore these iconic engines to full steam before the season slips away.
Locomotive 93
Our goal this year is to
get Locomotive 93 in service!
Last year she threw a hub liner off of driver number 4.
Then she burned one of the crown brasses that supports the
weight of the locomotive. In making those repairs, we found some boiler issues, not too unexpected on a 117-
year-old locomotive.
As I write this, the shop crew has begun their investigation of her boiler. I don’t know
what’s wrong…yet! But I do know one
thing: the repairs will be expensive!
Locomotive 40
Our biggest challenge is Locomotive 40,
the Queen of Steam at the Nevada
Northern Railway! Like all of our steam
locomotives she is a National Historic
Landmark.
Every 15 years, a steam locomotive has to undergo what is called a 1472-day boiler inspection that is mandated
by the federal government. This time when we started the inspection, we decided to evaluate the entire
locomotive. And not too surprising on a 116-year-old steam locomotive, we found issues.
The good news—her boiler passed inspection.
The bad news—her entire running gear must be rebuilt, and
she has serious firebox and steam cylinder issues.
